EXPEDITION: DEEP PLANET

Atlantic Productions for DISCOVERY CHANNEL

Five Part Series

Texan, Victor Vescovo, and Triton Submarines built a submersible to take Victor to the deepest point in each of the five Oceans. Something no-one had ever attempted before.
Now, after travelling 47,000 miles and completing 39 dives, the Five Deeps Expedition has clocked up a number of firsts including: The first manned descent to the bottom of each of the five Oceans and the world’s deepest manned dive in history – 10,925m in the Challenger Deep (Mariana Trench).
The wonderful legacy of this specially designed vehicle, LIMITING FACTOR, is that it is now the deepest diving two-man submersible available to science.

I filmed three of the five dives:
Java Trench (Indian Ocean)
Mariana Trench (Pacific Ocean)
Molloy Deep (Arctic Ocean)

ENDURANCE: THE HUNT FOR SHACKLETON'S SHIP

Atlantic Productions for History Channel: History's Greatest Mysteries series. Hosted by Lawrence Fishburne

90-minute special

1914 - Ernest Shackleton led an expedition to Antarctica, only for his ship 'Endurance' to become trapped, and ultimately destroyed, by shifting pack-ice. To survive, Shackleton and his 27-man crew would have to endure one of the most hostile environments known to man, traversing fragile ice floes and over 800 miles of freezing seas.
Shackleton’s unfailing commitment to bring all his men out alive turned him into a legend that inspires to this day. The Endurance’s reputation is as illustrious as the Titanic, yet the ship has remained lost for over a hundred years. Its final resting ground remains one of the greatest polar mysteries. Now, a documentary team follows a new ground-breaking expedition heading deep into the frozen seas to track down the last piece of the story: Shackleton’s lost ship.
Led by maritime archaeologist, Mensun Bound, this expedition is the result of two years of planning and more than $250 million investment in cutting-edge technology as they set out to break through the ice and locate this holy grail of shipwrecks.

I was the Cinematographer on this two month expedition into the Antarctic Weddell Sea.

Belsen was burnt to the ground when the Allies liberated it, however these powerful testimonies from the children of Bergen-Belsen assert that what happened at Belsen will never be forgotten.

THE DAY OF THE KAMIKAZE

Darlow Smithson for CHANNEL 4 (UK)

90-minute special

This film reveals the extraordinary story of the Japanese Kamikazes of World War II and the world's first suicide bombing campaign. Using archive, drama reconstructions and interviews with the survivors and their relatives, this film explores how thousands of young Japanese men were persuaded to sacrifice their lives in the name of war, and the lasting effect it has had on their families.

I shot all of the interviews in Japan and the USA and some of the Drama sequences.
It was a humbling experience to be in presence of these, mostly, old men who had survived and suffered the National shame that was laid upon the whole Kamikaze campaign after the War. Most of them had never before spoken about their involvement.
We know now that these men had been forced, not volunteered, to do this, and refusing was simply not an option!
Some of these men had been sitting in their planes with engines running, ready to go and die, when Japan surrendered to the Americans.
